dirky on "Best way to approach changing site theme etc?"

Hi,
I’m wondering what the best way to approach a site theme change/update without much site downtime?

Is it possible or best to install the new theme on a new installation of WP on a different domain and move over the content making the site how I want it, then somehow moving the site over to the existing domain?

I can install the theme on the existing site and then make the changes but I think there are several hours of work to get it just right.
I’d rather make the changes safely somewhere else and then just move it over somehow?
